Evermere, The Hidden Halfling City

Evermere is either the oldest continuously inhabited settlement on Aerlyth or a myth so well-maintained it has outlasted the nations that tried to find it. The truth is likely both.

Rumored to exist deep in the Eldrath Valley — where the Evermere freshwater lake system gives the city its name, or perhaps the city gave the lake its — Evermere is described in oral tradition and scattered traveler accounts as a settlement of layered markets, underground networks, and architecture that looks organic because much of it is: grown rather than built, shaped over generations to fit the valley's terrain rather than imposed upon it. Halfling innovation runs through it like wire through a circuit. Memory spheres that play back dreams. Prosthetic limbs calibrated to the owner's nervous system. Underground transit systems that predate anything the city-states built above ground.

The Sundering War scattered halfling communities across Adamah. Whether Evermere survived intact, went underground in a more literal sense, or simply closed its borders and stopped acknowledging the outside world is unknown. Halflings in the city-states don't discuss it. This is not evasion — it is a cultural position. Their ways are not for outsiders. Their silence on Evermere is the loudest answer they give.

The Evermere Lake still exists in the Eldrath Basin. During low-water seasons, structures are visible beneath its surface — sunken arches, the geometry of planned streets, foundations too regular to be natural. Whether these are ruins or simply the lower levels of a city still very much occupied is a question that remains, deliberately, unanswered.
